It could not have been a more perfect English summer's day. What a lovely fĂȘte; everyone happy and colourful. It could have been a film set for the Darling Buds of May.
And the York for Europe stall was equally pleasant to visit - a constant stream of well-wishers and enquirers.
And it seemed to work - we had many sensible chats about Britain's various dilemmas. Even disagreements were reasoned and constructive. Only one lady said "I am going to put 'no' against everything on your board." But no explanation followed.
